Happy Flamingo Day! I'm thankful to live in Florida, and I'm thankful for pink birds. What's not to love about these beauties? That's my pet flamingo, Flo, sitting on the dash of our car. I tell everybody her middle name is "Go", because she loves to go for car rides.
Flamingos are really popular here in the Sunshine State. Look how many are roosting at Lowe's.
The flamingo was first spotted in the Florida Keys in 1832 by James Audubon. The plastic version debuted in 1958, and has become a popular yard ornament, especially in my state. Some people think they're tacky, but I absolutely adore them. Don't they look pretty alongside the Golden Rain blossoms?
When I first moved to the Space Coast, I saw pink birds flying near the river, and thought they were flamingos. I found out later, they were roseate spoonbills. Here is a picture I took of a flock of them in the Merritt Island Wildlife Preserve. They don't have long legs, but are just as brightly colored as flamingos.
I've been blessed to live in Florida all of my life, and I love living where people vacation. It really is a paradise, and I'm so thankful that my Heavenly Father planted me here.
Thankful Thursday is my day to focus on and be thankful for all of the good things in my life.
