Lord Lift Me Up

We were born for such a time as this...every day brings news of war and rumors of war.  We have a choice.  We can focus on the world, the depressing news, our personal problems, or we can focus on God's Word.  We can be depressed or we can be at peace.  I wrote about this being our time to shine in this previous POST.

I knew a gentleman who lived in constant pain.  I asked him how he kept such a happy demeanor.  He said, "It's a choice.  I can be depressed or I can be happy for all I have."  I try to remember this when trials come my way.

Following is from a weekly email devotion by Nancy Campbell of Above Rubies, used with her permission.  She sends a weekly email that you can sign up for on her website.  www.aboverubies.org

"Are you familiar with the words of the hymn by Johnson Oatman, Jr.? I’ll print them in full at the end of this devotion in case you are not familiar with them. The chorus says:

Lord, lift me up and let me stand,

By faith, on Heaven’s tableland,

A higher plane than I have found;

Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

This is my prayer. I am sure it is yours too. God wants us to walk in an uplifted spirit. He does not want us to be “down in the dumps” and depressed. He wants us to be a “lifting up” and an “uplifting people,” in our homes and wherever we go. And because of this, God gives us lots of encouragement. The Bible speaks of ten areas He want us to lift up in our lives. Shall we look at these together?

  1. LIFT UP YOUR EYES

Where are your eyes today? Your physical eyes and the eyes of your heart? Are you looking at all you must accomplish today? Are you looking at your problems and dwelling on them?

Can I encourage you to change the direction of your eyes? When you look down, when you look at your problems, and you look at the mess around you, life seems overwhelming. But this is not the right place for your eyes. Lift your eyes, dear mother. Look up to Jesus. It’s amazing what happens when you look up to Him. Your circumstances may not change, but your attitude changes. Instead of living under your problems you will live above them!

During scorning and contempt from people, the Psalmist confessed: “Unto THEE lift I up mine eyes” (Psalm 123:1). He didn’t get into depression because everyone was against him. He found his victory in putting His eyes upon the Lord.

I think of the tragedy in David’s life when he and his army came back from battle to find their city of Ziklag burned to the ground. And worse—all their wives and children taken captive! The people wept until they had no more power to weep. They wanted to stone David they were so grieved. David was at his wit’s end, but then he “encouraged himself in the LORD his God” (1 Samuel 30:6).

Before this, David didn’t know what to do. But when he lifted his eyes to the Lord instead of the devastation around him, God showed him what to do. He gave him a plan and with God’s help they were able to rescue every wife and every child.

When your eyes are fixed on your problem you can’t even think straight, let alone know what to do. But when you lift your eyes to the Lord, trust Him, and rest in Him, you will hear His voice speaking to you. He will show you His plan and give you His peace.

Don’t you love 2 Corinthians 4:16-18? “For which because we faint not; but though our outward man perishes, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a FAR MORE EXCEEDING AND ETERNAL WEIGHT OF GLORY: while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” Do you notice God gives five adjectives to describe the glory that He works in us as we go through our difficulties?

Psalm 34:5: “They looked unto him, and were lightened, and their faces were not ashamed.”

Psalm 59:10,11 (KNOX): “TO THEE I LOOK, the God who strengthens me, the God who watches over me; my God, and all my hope of mercy.”

Blessings from Nancy Campbell

PRAYER:

“Dear Father, I want to keep my eyes upon You. The things of this world are temporal. Why should I waste my time groveling over them? Help me to constantly keep my eyes upon You and Your truths and Your eternal values. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

AFFIRMATION:

My eyes are ever toward the Lord!

I’M PRESSING ON THE UPWARD WAY

I’m pressing on the upward way,

New heights I’m gaining every day;

Still praying as I’m onward bound,

“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Refrain:

Lord, lift me up and let me stand,

By faith, on Heaven’s tableland,

A higher plane than I have found;

Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

My heart has no desire to stay

Where doubts arise and fears dismay;

Though some may dwell where those abound,

My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.

I want to live above the world,

Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;

For faith has caught the joyful sound,

The song of saints on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height

And catch a gleam of glory bright;

But still I’ll pray till heav’n I’ve found,

“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

30 Days of Praise Day 22 - Peace

*

Father, I praise You for the peace You've brought to my life . . . especially during this pandemic. I haven't always been peaceful.  I used to worry, fret, and be anxious about many things.  Your Word has taught me to cast my cares on You and trust You to work things out -- in Your time and in Your way.

I prize peace above all.  In my mind.  In my home. In my relationships.  Thank You for teaching me over the years how to achieve that peace.

Praise is a big part of it.  When something comes up that steals my peace, I've learned to turn to Your Word for comfort and guidance.  I've learned to accept the things I can't change and to change the things I can.  Your guidance shows me how to do that.  Then I praise You for the knowledge that You are in control and You will guide me through a problem.

I thank You for this wonderful passage from Philippians 4:4-8

 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Thankful Thursday - Peace / Shalom

Golden Cottage peace lilies
Did you know that the Hebrew word for peace is "shalom"? We say shalom to say hello and shalom to say goodbye - thus always extending the desire for peace.  It's a lovely word.

One thing I've said over and over in my life is this:  "I prize peace above everything."  Peace is a beautiful, wonderful, and amazing thing in one's life.  To be at rest, without anxiety, with a grateful heart and sweet serenity.  I prize peace so dearly, I think because I lived without it for much of my life.  Now, I have peace and I am most grateful to God.  Here is how I found it:

"Those who love your Torah have great peace;
nothing makes them stumble."
Psalm 119:165

Here are a few of the peace-full things around Golden Cottage lately:

The view from my office desk
One of the birdbaths at Golden Cottage

The shadowbox Jem made for my daddy's military service

The view from my living room toward Golden Cottage Garden

The beauty of flowers and plants - tenderly cared for by Mr. Green Jeans (aka as my sweet hubby)

We have 36 blooms so far this year.

Our sweet fur-baby, napping peacefully
Mr. Blue Jay who loves to steal cat food

Another fur-baby, still in ICU, but doing so much better now.  Thank you, Father
And here's a photo taken on my second trip to Israel.  It's in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem.  The garden is a beautiful, peaceful place.  I'm longing to go there again . . . and it could be soon!  You can read about my visits at this link.

I found this meme about peace (Garden of Bright Images on Facebook).  I like it.  I found that rest in Adonai, through Yeshua and obedience to His Torah.  Shalom to you all, Gail-Friends.

Sabbath Music - Island of Peace & Rest

Shabbat shalom means Sabbath peace.  I'm been meditating on peace this week and thanking Hashem for that wonderful blessing.  I was reading Proverbs 3 this morning, which contains a good passage to meditate on as you observe the Sabbath:

Happy the person who finds wisdom,
the person who acquires understanding;
for her profit exceeds that of silver,
gaining her is better than gold,
she is more precious than pearls —
nothing you want can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand,
riches, and honor in her left.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.

Yes, when we find and obey His wisdom, look at the great benefits.  Peace is one of them.  When we follow His paths, we find His peace that passes understanding.

When I was following the path of the world, and even the pagan church, I rarely had peace.   Since I began to obey the Torah, my peace has increased along with my wisdom.

This song Island of Peace and Rest by Zemer Levav is perfect for the Sabbath.  I pray you have Sabbath peace and all-week-long peace, Gail-Friends.

Thankful Thursday - Quietness and Peace

I'm so thankful for books and. I must confess, I'm a hopeless book hoarder.  My husband is, too, so our home has them overflowing in every room. (Yes, the bathroom, too.)

One of my absolute favorites is Streams in the Desert, which I've used since 1976.  My first copy fell apart, and the one below is getting very worn.  Understandable, since I've used it daily since 1988.

I love it, though, because I've made notes in the margins and on the inside of the covers.  It has become a kind of journal, really.  I especially love the poetry Mrs. Cowan included.  This one, about quietness, touched me this week:

 "He giveth quietness." O Elder Brother,
Whose homeless feet have pressed our path of pain,
Whose hands have borne the burden of our sorrow,
That in our losses we might find our gain.
Of all Thy gifts and infinite consolings,
I ask but this: in every troubled hour
To hear Thy voice through all the tumults stealing,
And rest serene beneath its tranquil power.
Cares cannot fret me if my soul be dwelling
In the still air of faith's untroubled day;
Grief cannot shake me if I walk beside thee,
My hand in Thine along the darkening way.
Content to know there comes a radiant morning
When from all shadows I shall find release,
Serene to wait the rapture of its dawning--
Who can make trouble when Thou sendest peace?

I don't know about you, Gail-Friends, but I prize quietness and peace in my life above everything.  I guess it's because the early years of my life were filled with drama of one kind or another.  I'm so thankful to have learned the value of quietness and peace, which I learned through trials that led me to treasure quiet, alone time with my Heavenly Father.

As a young woman, I would obsess over my problems for days.  My mind was like a hampster wheel, running over and over again.  But, over time I learned to focus on being still in a quiet place.  Usually, I'd sit outside on my porch and gaze at the trees.  I'd thank Him for the trees, the birds, and the clouds.

Then, I'd read the Scriptures, usually the Psalms.  A verse would stand out to me, and I'd focus on it, reading it out loud over and over again.  Then, I'd write the verse in my journal.  Taking my mind off my problem and focusing on His Word filled my heart with the sweetest peace, because He was speaking to me through the Scriptures.

I also learned to pray this prayer often:

In the beginning, my quiet time was short, maybe ten to fifteen minutes.  Over the years, the time expanded.  Now, I linger long, enjoying our time together so very much.  As I've clung to this process, I've found that every trial has brought me closer to Him and taught me things no one can ever take away.  Sitting still, talking to Him, reading the Scriptures, and listening to His voice can turn into hours filled with JOY.  Oh, how I love sitting at His feet.

Thankful Thursday is my day to focus on, and be thankful for, the good things in my life.

Thankful Thursday - Peace in Dark Days

This is a pic of a photo purchased at the museum ( by Gail Golden)

The photos above and below are of a sculpture I saw recently during a visit to the Polasek Museum in Winter Park, Florida. The image is titled "Mother Crying Over The World" by Albin Polasek.

photo of the sculpture  by Gail Golden

I was so struck by this image.  It depicts my grieving heart  in a tactical form.  Lately, I have wept and grieved over the things happening in my country and in my world.  These are the things that have been on my mind lately:

  • The murder of nine worshippers in a church in North Carolina.  Hy heart hurts for the families and loved ones left behind.
  • The subsequent banning of a Confederate flag as a sign of hate.  I am seeing my Southern culture and history attacked as racist.  I am not a racist.  I don't hate anyone.  I love and honor my Confederate ancestors who fought in the war, and I don't want their memories destroyed.
  • The SCOTUS decision to approve homosexual marriage and the subsequent evil, depraved images I've seen as they paraded their sin in the streets.  I'm seeing Christian people attacked because of their stand in saying homosexuality is wrong and refusing to participate in depravity.
  • The selling of aborted babies body parts by Planned Parenthood.  This is so horrible, that my stomach turns when I think about it.
  • The murder of American soldiers on an American base, by a Muslim terrorist.  I'm also grieved that our soldiers are unarmed on the military bases and left to be sitting ducks for murderers.

These things are on my mind.  I am grieved and groaning in my spirit.

I have to seek peace.  I have to cling to G-d's hand in such terrible times.  I have to read His Word and remember that He is in control.  I have to remind myself that He allows evil.  I don't know why, but He does.  I have to say out loud, "You do all things well.  Blessed be Your Name."  As I praise Him, my heaviness leaves me.

So, today, I am thankful for peace.  He gives it to me when I turn to Him and seek His face.

I'm also thankful for prayer.  I can pour out my heart to Him. I can pray for my country and its people to repent and turn to Him and His ways.  I can cast my cares in His loving hands, and believe that He hears my prayers.

He promised me His love, and His comfort during dark days and troubled times.  I know it's true because I feel His sweet peace fill me when I turn my eyes on Him.
