The Encouragement of Psalms

Dear Gail-Friends:

Do you know the encouragement of the Psalms?  My practice is to read one psalm every night before bed. Psalm 91 is my favorite and I've been working on memorizing it.  It's not easy at my age, but I will persevere.

I found Psalm 124 to be a great lifter of the soul on many occasions.  I've been through many battles in my seven decades of life.  But praise and glory to His Name, I've come through every one victoriously with a Golden Nugget -- a lesson that has helped me know Him better.  Haleluyah!

This version is from the Tree of Life Bible.

Psalm 124

1 A Song of Ascents. Of David.
“Had Adonai not been on our side”
—let Israel now say—
2 “Had Adonai not been on our side,
when men rose up against us,
3 then they would have swallowed us alive,
when their wrath burned against us.
4 Then the waters would have engulfed us,
the torrent would have swept over our soul,
5 then the raging waters
would have swept over our soul.”

6 Blessed be Adonai, who has not given us
as prey for their teeth.
7 Our soul has escaped like a bird
out of the snare of the trappers—
the snare is broken, and we escaped!
8 Our help is in the Name of Adonai,
Maker of heaven and earth.

Do you have a psalm that ministers to you? I'd love for you to share it with me.

Memorizing Psalm 91

Psalm 91 is what I call my hurricane psalm because I read it over and over while going through a major hurricane.  What a comfort it is.**  I've written about this psalm six times here on my blog.

Over the past several months, I've been trying to commit Psalm 91 to memory. Believe me, Gail-Friends, it is so hard!!  I'm so grateful for the Bible verses I learned as a child because as I/we grow older, memorization becomes more difficult.

Recently I discovered this musical version of Psalm 91 by Aaron Shust.  It's a catchy tune and I really like it.  I hope you will listen, song along, and be blessed.  It's a great song for the Sabbath.

Shabbat shalom.

**Since I've lived in Florida all of my life, I've gone through many hurricanes (three of them in 2004).  Here's a post about going through hurricanes.

30 Days of Praise - Day 6 - Psalm 91

**

This comforting promise is from Psalm 91:3 - a good meditation during the thirty days of staying at home.

Father, I praise You for Your and deliverance and protection during times like these.  Our common sense and good practices go a long way but, ultimately, You are the one who protects, preserves, and delivers us from plagues.  I thank You, Father.

**Thanks to Christine Miller for this beautiful graphic, used by permission.

I hope you will leave a word of praise for our Heavenly Father in the comments - even if it's just one word - Haleluyah!  Let's praise Him together every day for the month of April.   Be sure to visit Day 1 to learn about my giveaway on May 1.

Thankful Thursday - My Corona Virus Safety Plan

What a week!  If you've turned on the news, you know by now that we're in a pandemic due to the Corona flu virus.  Businesses, schools, churches, and even theme parks here in Florida are closing.  People are stocking up on food, hand sanitizer, and toilet paper because it looks like the whole country may be shutting down for a couple of weeks.  Fear and hysteria are rampant - mainly due to the fanned flames of the mainstream media (MSM) outlets.   But, dear Gail-Friends, all is well.

Adonai is still on the throne and all is well.

All is well  -  in spite of what your news media is shouting at you 24/7.  Our country has gone through worse health threats than this virus . . .  and survived.  We will get through this.  So, take a deep breath and think on these things:

  • Use common sense and good hygiene
  • Meditate on the Scriptures below
  • Keep calm and pray
  • Share these things with those who are afraid

Psalm 91 is my go-to psalm in times like these.  I learned to cling to this passage while going through THREE back-to-back hurricanes in 2004.  You can read about it HERE.

Dwell in the Shelter of Elyon

Psalm 91

Make note of the words in red

1 He who dwells in the shelter of Elyon,
will abide in the shadow of Shaddai.
2 I will say of Adonai,
“He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.
3 For He will rescue you from the hunter’s trap
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you will find refuge.
His faithfulness is body armor and shield.
5 You will not fear the terror by night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the plague that stalks in darkness,
nor the scourge that lays waste at noon.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
and ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look on with your eyes
and see the wicked paid back.
9 For you have made Elyon your dwelling,
even Adonai, who is my refuge,
10 so no evil will befall you
nor any plague come near your tent.
11 For He will give His angels charge over you,
to guard you in all your ways.
12 Upon their hands they will lift you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.[a]
13 You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
trample the young lion and serpent.
14 “Because he has devoted his love to Me,
    I will deliver him.
I will set him securely on high,
    because he knows My Name.
15 When he calls on Me, I will answer him.
I will be with him in trouble, rescue him, and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him My salvation.”
(Tree of Life Version)

And listen to this soft, slow, comforting rendition of this song:  Psalm 91

Psalm 27 is another go-to Scripture to cling to.  You can read about my experience with this beautiful passage HERE.

Let Your Heart Take Courage

Psalm 27

1 Of David.
Adonai is my light and my salvation:
    whom should I fear?
Adonai is the stronghold of my life:
    whom should I dread?
2 When evildoers approached me to devour my flesh
—my adversaries and my foes—they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army camp besieges me, my heart will not fear.
Though war breaks out against me, even then will I be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of Adonai,
that will I seek:
to dwell in the House of Adonai
all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of Adonai,
and to meditate in His Temple.
5 For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His sukkah,
conceal me in the shelter of His tent,
and set me high upon a rock.
6 Then will my head be high above my enemies around me.
In His Tabernacle I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy.
I will sing, yes, sing praises to Adonai.
7 Hear, Adonai, when I call with my voice,
be gracious to me and answer me.
8 To You my heart says: “Seek My face.”
Your face, Adonai, I seek.
9 Do not hide Your face from me.
Do not turn Your servant away in anger.
You have been my help.
Do not abandon me or forsake me,
    O God my salvation.
10 Though my father and my mother
forsake me, Adonai will take me in.
11 Teach me Your way, Adonai,
and lead me on a level path—
because of my enemies.
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes.
For false witnesses rise up against me,
    breathing out violence.
13 Surely I trust that I will see the goodness
of Adonai in the land of the living.
14 Wait for Adonai.
Be strong, let Your heart take courage,
    and wait for Adonai.
(Tree of Life Version)

And listen to this comforting song based on the passage:  Adonai Uri/The Lord Is My Light by Michael ben David.

And this verse is so very important:

(put on) the garment of praise
        for the spirit of heaviness
(Isaiah 61:3b Tree of Life Version)
Listen to this song.  Oh, it's SO GOOD - Garments of Praise by Robin Mark
I know your feet will want to dance - so let them!  And when you're tired from dancing, lie down and listen to this one  -    In Your Presence by Paul Wilbur.

Turn off the news! Meditate on this verse and sing, praise Adonai, lift your hands, dance . . . and that spirit of fear and heaviness will leave you.
And remember this, Gail-Friends:  Adonai works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)  He will bring some good from this experience.  He promised.
Blessings to y'all and have a good week.

Thankful Thursday is my weekly discipline - to express my gratitude to Hashem for His over-flowing, abundant blessings.

Thankful Thursday - Psalm 91 - My Hurricane Psalm

A big storm is coming, so today we, and all of Florida, are preparing for Hurricane Dorian.  I'm praying, too, and I'm believing Adonai will hear my prayers for Him to steer the storm to the east.  It's a monster storm as of Thursday evening and we already have plenty of supplies because we stay ready.

We did go to Aldi to get a few items, and I snapped this photo:

That whole cold case was empty except for the salad.  I laughed.  People have their priorities!  And during a hurricane, I guess salad isn't high on the list.  It is on mine, and I'm well stocked!  Be sure to check out my past posts, photos, and tips for going through hurricanes HERE.

I've been through many hurricanes in my long life here in Florida.  The first was Hurricane Dora in 1964, which was a category 3.  I was a teenager and remember the high winds and the eerie silence when the eye passed over our house.  The next day, our yard and street were flooded almost up to the front door.  Thanks be to Adonai, we had no major damage.

I'll never forget 2004, which was my most serious experience with hurricanes because I went through three   I survived Charlie, Frances and Jean.  On August 13, Charlie came in on Florida's west coast as a category 4, but weakened as it headed toward the east coast.  No damage and no loss of power for me, praise Adonai!   He left behind lots of debris in my yard that got piled up for the trash truck to pick up.  The pick-up was delayed because there was so much for them to pick up in our area.  I was having an engagement party for my daughter, Amanda, and kept praying (and believing) the pick-up would be gone by the party.  It was HUGE!  Praise Hashem, they picked it up the morning of the party!  Haleluyah!

Hurricane Frances, a category 2, came next -- THREE WEEKS LATER!  She hit our coast with 80 mph winds, so it was serious. Thankfully, winds had diminished from 105.  We got 15 inches of rain from old Frances and she left behind terrible destruction. Once again, I had no damage...only yard debris,  and did not lose power.

And then, THREE WEEKS LATER, Hurricane Jeanne hit as a category 3.  I'll never forget it.  I was at work, and someone told us to go home because another hurricane was headed our way!  Thankfully, I had left my storm shutters up from Frances' visit.  Jeanne was a bad one and did great damage to our coast.  Amazingly, I had no damage and did not lose power. Lots of debris was left behind, though.

We were threatened by Hurricane Ivan during that month, too, but thankfully it passed us by.  I was prepared for it, though, because I left those hurricane shutters up through November which is the end of hurricane season.

Jem, however, has been through two catastrophic hurrcanes before we were married - Ivan in 2004, and Katrina in 2005.  Katrina was the worst.  He was living in Alabama at the Magee Farm / Museum, where he was curator.  The house was 100 years old, and withstood the storm like a champ.  No damage and no problems.  Haleluyah!

I give all the praise to Adonai for his protection and provision.  He was with me all the way.  I was single at the time, and my future son-in-love came both times to help me put storm shutters on my windows.  I'm so thankful for William.

In 2016, we went through Hurricane Matthew, which was a category 3 that rode north on our coast.  There was a lot of damage to our area, but we praise Adonai that He was with us.  Because the storm hovered twenty miles off our coast, the damage was not nearly what it could have been.  We were so blessed once again  not to have any serious damage and only lost power for a few hours.  Our wonderful son-in-love loaned us a generator, but by the time Jem and he got it set up, the electricity came back on.  Haleluyah!  We did lose enough shingles to get a new roof paid for by our insurance company.  Thankfully, we did not have any leaks.  That was a big blessing, really, because the roof was due for replacement.  Another big Haleluyah!

Through each and every hurricane, I prayed for God to protect all in this area.  I also meditated on Psalm 91, which I call my hurricane psalm.  Hashem is so good and faithful to provide us with comfort in times of peril.  I'm thankful for the peace I've felt in the midst of every single one of the storms I've been through.  I know His shield of protection covers me and I can rest easy.

So, if you're going through Hurricane Dorian, or any other storm, this psalm is for you:

1 You who live in the shelter of ‘Elyon,
who spend your nights in the shadow of Shaddai,
2
who say to Adonai, “My refuge! My fortress!
My God, in whom I trust!” —
3
he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter
and from the plague of calamities;
4
he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his truth is a shield and protection.
You will not fear the terrors of night
or the arrow that flies by day,
6
or the plague that roams in the dark,
or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.
7
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand;
but it won’t come near you.
8
Only keep your eyes open,
and you will see how the wicked are punished.
9
For you have made Adonai, the Most High,
who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.
10
No disaster will happen to you,
no calamity will come near your tent;
11
for he will order his angels to care for you
and guard you wherever you go.
12
They will carry you in their hands,
so that you won’t trip on a stone.
13
You will tread down lions and snakes,
young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.
14
“Because he loves me, I will rescue him;
because he knows my name, I will protect him.
15
He will call on me, and I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble.
I will extricate him and bring him honor.
16
I will satisfy him with long life
and show him my salvation.”

Blessings and have a good week.  Let me know if I can pray for you.

Sabbath Music - Psalm 91: A Prayer of Protection

Over the past seven days, Psalm 91 has been my constant meditation.  I keep reading it and thinking about the blessings of being protected by Hashem.  This song is an adaptation of the psalm, accompanied by Scripture:  Psalm 91 - A Prayer of Protection.  I feel His presence as I listen.  I hope you are blessed by it.

I keep saying over and over and over again, "Thank you, Father."  We're so grateful for His protecting hand   You can read my previous post He Covered Us to see how we fared through the storm.

Last week at this time, we were in preparation mode for the Hurricane Irma's approach.   On that Shabbat, we did not hold a service at the synagogue, but did our service at home and encouraged our congregation to do the same.
o
That night, we were blessed to enjoy the company of our son-in-law, William.  He'd come by to drop something off for her, and we invited him to join our service.  It was a beautiful, blessed time together as we observed His commandment to honor the Sabbath.   We praised Hashem, prayed together,  read the Scriptures, then blessed and took the bread and wine.  The photo at the top of this post was taken by William.  I took one, too, but I'm not the photographer he is, so he gave me permission to share it.

We're looking forward to our service at the synagogue tonight.  I've been getting praise reports by text and phone, and can't wait to hear more of what Hashem has done this past week.  It's going to be a great Haleluyah time together.

Thank you all for your prayers, Gail-Friends.  I'd love to hear about your praise reports, too.  Just make a comment below.

Sabbath Music - He Covers Me

I have a wonderful song to share with you today.  Under His Wings by Christine Jackman, is based on Psalm 91, which I call my hurricane psalm. I love how the children in the video are getting the visual and tactile lesson of the tallit being like the wings of ADONAI.

As I've worked today, I've remembered 2004 when I went through three back-to-back hurricanes.  Psalm 91 was my constant meditation, and it is comforting to me today.  We've been working yesterday and today to prepare for the storm, but this evening and tomorrow, I will be still for the Sabbath.

I will play this song, while draped in my prayer shawl, and imagine His wings covering and protecting us, our family, our congregation, and our whole state.  I will read the passage, and praise G-d for His protection and provision.  I pray you meditate on this Psalm, and join me in the prayer below it.

Psalm 91
(My Hurricane Psalm)

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the
L-rd, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My G-d, in Him I will trust.”
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
And from the perilous pestilence.

4 He shall cover you with His feathers,

And under His wings you shall take refuge;

His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,

Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,

Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;

But it shall not come near you.

8 Only with your eyes shall you look,

And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the L-rd, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

10 No evil shall befall you,

Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,

To keep you in all your ways.

12 In their hands they shall bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,

The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble;

I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life I will satisfy him,

And show him My salvation.”
As a native Floridian, I' been through many hurricanes, so I've learned to always be prepared, but I know many people are very afraid as Hurricane Irma approaches.   If you would like us to pray for you or someone else, please post your prayer request in the comments section below.

This is my prayer for all in the path of the hurricane:

Dear Heavenly Father, Master of the Universe, we humbly pray for the storm to move east and out to sea or to dissapate completely.  If it does come over land and there are devastating effects, we know You will give us strength to get through the trial.  You always teach us more about You in times like these.  Because we know this, we praise you and thank you in all things.

Father,  if the storm comes, we pray for the people who will be in the path of Hurricane Irma.  We pray you will help them as they prepare or evacuate.  We pray you will protect them from harm and destruction of body and property.

Father, if the storm comes, we pray for the first responders who will help after the storm.  Protect them, and comfort the families they leave behind as they go out to assist others.  I pray for neighbors to help neighbors and pull together for their communities during this stressful time.

Give them awareness of your presence, especially in times like these.  We pray they will be comforted by your Word and your presence.  We pray they will feel your comfort and protection surrounding them.

Thank you for preserving your Word to guide and comfort us.  Thank you for love and your presence.  We pray and believe, in the power of the name of Yeshua, our Messiah.  Amain.

Shabbat shalom and blessings to you, Gail-Friends.

HURRICANE UPDATE AFTER THE STORM.

Pray for those in the path of Hurricane Sandy

As a native Floridian, I' been through many hurricanes, so I've learned to always be prepared.  I know the people in the storm's path are fearful of the unknown.   If you have someone you would like us to pray for by name, please post your prayer request in the comments section below.

Father,  we pray for the people who will be in the path of Hurricane Sandy.  I pray you will help them in their preparations.  I pray you will protect them from harm and destruction of body and property.

Father, I pray for the first responders who will help in the aftermath.  Protect them, and comfort the families they leave behind as they go out to assist others.  I pray for neighbors to help neighbors and pull together for their communities during this stressful time.

Give them awareness of your presence, even in times like these.  I pray they will be comforted by the Psalm that you gave me when I went through four back-to-back hurricanes in 2004.
