A Timely Poem

The protests over our Confederate statues are insane.  I ran across this poem and thought it was share-worthy because this is what it's come to:

A Bright New Day - Chuck Porretto
-
Kick in that marble headstone, for he wore a coat of grey.
He has no right to rest in peace upon our bright new day.
Dismantle that old statue; for he battled for the south.
And don't you stand against us, either join or shut your mouth.
-
Knock down that bloody obelisk; you know he owned a slave;
and dump his wretched remnants deep inside an unmarked grave.
The bearded top hat fellow, blow him up and knock him down.
The Navajo will tell you that he scorched their sacred ground.
-
The one that wore a wheelchair, let us purge him from the earth,
His new deal was internment for the sin of Asian birth.
And every war memorial is next upon our list.
for the innocent collateral demands they not exist.
-
Blow up that Black Hills mountain, as we feel the rush no more;
for a roughish riding monger killing Spaniards by the score.
The other peddled genocide against the native Sioux,
and bondage is the stain upon the loathsome other two.
-
Rip up the iron railway from our sea to shining sea.
The Chinaman was chattel, as he toiled slavishly.
Incinerate the White House, and then bury its remains;
for some of its construction was completed wearing chains.
-
There is no rest until our noble cause is finally through.
And that is when we burn the flag adorned with red and blue.
And now that we are at it, let us cross the briny sea,
and topple every monument where righteous disagree.
-
The Roman Colosseum, for the Christians that would bleed.
The Arc de Triomphe glorifies a tyrant's bloody greed.
And all the German building that were built before the war.
And every Ancient fortress that still stands upon a shore.
-
The Pyramids an edifice to power over serf.
The China Wall a racist, xenophobic love of turf.
The world is full of evil, we shall right it with our force.
And everyone is guilty..... Well except for us of course.

Guts, Truth, and Common Sense

.
The horrible tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia this week has been heavy on my mind.  It's spurred me on to write this post.

I'll start out by letting you know that I condemn every hate group represented at that event.  My heart breaks for the mother who lost her daughter, and for those who were injured.  Violence revolts me.

Second, I'll say that the Confederate flag is not a symbol of white supremacy for me.  I'm a Southern gal whose ancestors fought in the Civil War.  I'm proud of my heritage, and I fly that flag in my yard to show my love for the South.  I'm not a racist.   We are Jews, and we know about hate, bigotry, and racism from personal experience.  My husband is a Southerner and a historian of the Civil War.  He has done years of research on the subject and speaks to groups to help them understand the truth about our heritage.  The characterization of Southerners as racist bigots is a lie propagated by the media, plain and simple.  I must remind you that we, as Southerners, have the First Amendment right to express our views and to fly our flag without fear.

Third, it is still not clear to me which group was permitted first to hold a protest in Charlottesville.  If it was a group such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans wanting to protect their Southern heritage, then I'm with them one hundred percent.  If it was a hate group that claims whites are superior to other races, then I'm one hundred percent against them.

The videos of the violence turned my stomach.  The way the network news handled it made me even sicker.   I began to feel hopelessness creep in.  I feel that every time I watch the network news.

But then, I watched President Trump's press conference yesterday and felt a great surge of hope shower over me.  I heard him say that ALL of the hate groups were at fault and condemned their actions.  He then went on to say (about the removal of Confederate statues), "Where do we go from here?  Will Lincoln or Washington or Jefferson statues have to be removed?  Where does this end?"

Finally, the voice of common sense was raised.  The truth was spoken.   My hope was renewed.  I sat still, basking in the knowledge that we have a great president.  I felt so glad that he's not afraid to speak up against the evil things happening in my country.

I've felt that hope every time he comes out with his frank expressions of truth.  America has lacked truth and common sense for a long time, my friends.  We've watched politicians pad their pocketbooks and their pride with backroom deals and good old boy shenanigans till we got sick of it.  We voted for Trump because he said he would "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN."  He talked about "draining the swamp," and we liked that.  We liked that he wasn't part of the swamp, and he didn't need anybody's money to build his empire.

So, he was elected. . . and now all of the devils in hell have come forth to beat him to a pulp.  They've been saying for the past two years that he could not get past his latest tweet, but he comes through with flying colors every time.  Why? Because we read his tweets and we like what he says.  We like that his words can't be twisted by the media propagandists.

I made the mistake of watching the network news again last night,  just to see if they'd air his entire statement.  Of course not! But they did air his condemnation of the hate groups and violence.  And they aired the statement about "where does it end?" Hip! Hip! Hooray!  But, I waited too long to turn it off.  They began to twist his words, and attack him without mercy.  I got so mad, I wanted to throw my shoe at the TV.  My calm, level-headed husband calmed me down and told me everything would be okay.

He's told me that so many times, friends.  I'm beginning to believe him now because I can see that Trump is not going to back down.  He's not going to cower and run away with his tail between his legs.  He's a man of conviction, and he's going to fight for us.  He IS fighting for us.  You won't hear about the good things he's done on the network news.

I encourage you to read and listen to the news from alternative sources.  Turn off the propaganda.  Read Trump's tweets.  Watch videos on Twitter and YouTube to hear his words without edits.  Here's the full press conference from yesterday.  This is from Fox New Phoenix.

Please pray for our President.  He's got a hard row to hoe, as my daddy used to say.  It's a big job to drain the swamp, and he has to fight off vicious snakes (politicians) and alligators (the liberal media), and it's not going to be easy.  Pray that he will be protected and that G-d will lead him in the paths of righteousness and justice.

Two years ago, I prayed and hoped for a change when the time drew near for Obama to leave office.  Donald Trump was not my first choice, but I am well pleased with the job he's done since taking office.  The man has a deep love of America, is unafraid to speak the truth, and he has common sense.

Thankful Thursday - My Flags

I'm so thankful for my country and my flag. We fly it year 'round, not just on the 4th of July.  We're working to teach our grandson history and patriotism.  Here he is helping put flags in the yard.

We love our patriotic flags, too, and fly them with pride. Here we fly some others that are important to us.

We fly our Southern Confederacy flags with pride, too.

My husband is a Civil War historian and speaks to groups about the role of minorities who fought in that war.  Most people are surprised to learn that Jews fought alongside free blacks on the side of the Confederacy.  Also, people are surprised to learn that the war was not about slavery.  It was about the rights of the individual states.

Being a Jew, my husband knows about racism and discrimination.  He's been called names and treated differently because of his ethnicity as well as his religion.   Even though he's been through it, he does not try to restrict the right of others to express their opinions.

Please understand that my heart is broken because of the murders last month in South Carolina.  But, this flag did not kill those people.

We are not racists, and we will continue to fly this flag with pride.  It stands for our Southern ancestors who fought for state's rights and against the intrusion of government into their lives.  Both my husband and I have relatives who served, and we honor their love of country and their efforts to maintain the rights of states.

We accept other people and their beliefs, and expect the same acceptance and respect from others.  I don't like the rainbow flag that gay people fly, but I respect their right to fly it.  I don't like the ISIS flag, but that, too, is allowed in our country.  I'm not demanding they stop flying it.

This is AMERICA, and I'm especially thankful to live in this wonderful country.  We prize our freedom.  We claim to be the land of tolerance and free speech.  There is grave danger, my friends, in this push to stop free speech.  Be afraid.  Be very afraid because our freedoms are going by the wayside in preference to an agenda that is very destructive.

We must stand up for our beliefs.  Don't just sit and do nothing when you see your freedoms being destroyed.  Let your voice be heard with other people, on Facebook, on blogs, to your senator, your congressman and yes, your president.  I write e-mails almost weekly to let my representatives know how I feel about issues of the day.

We have a duty as citizens to take part because we have a "representative" government.  My friends, our freedoms are precious.  We will stand before G-d one day and answer for what we did with the wonderful gift of citizenship in this great country.  It is our duty to speak up.  We are to pray, yes, but we must also put feet to our prayers by taking part in this country as citizens.

I heard someone on Facebook say, "Jesus and Paul didn't try to change the government."  No, they lived under Roman rule and didn't have the privilege of helping make laws for their country.  Even Paul appealed to Rome when he was arrested.

Tomorrow is the 4th of July, and many people don't even know what it's all about.  A good start is to read the Constitution.  It's a real eye opener.  Here's a link for reading it online:

I'm thankful for the G-dly men who prayed and  formed a  government based on Biblical principles.  I will celebrate them and the wonderful freedoms I hold dear.

What are you thankful for today?

Thankful Thursday is my day to focus on and be thankful for the beautiful things in my life.
