30 Days of Praise Day 25 - Laughter

This always makes me laugh

Father, I praise You for laughter. And I praise You and thank you for my husband who makes me laugh every day.  I vote him for the Best Person to Be Quarantined With Award.  Thank You that He wakes up every morning in a happy mood.  I've never known anybody who just thinks of jokes all day long, but that's what he does. Thank you for giving me my own personal rabbi AND my own personal comedian.*

I praise You for the internet, too.  I love watching cat and puppy videos, and finding things that make me smile or laugh out loud.  Laughter is good in times like these and here are some You've brought my way lately.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.(Proverbs 17:22)

*Dear Gail-Friends:  I have to share some of the funny things he says and does.

He has a huge collection of hats - one for every occasion! Some have quotations that come with them.  Like his British pith helmet.  He wears that one for British events.  He strikes a pose, looks off into the distance, and quotes Rudyard Kipling, "In the Inja climes where I spent me times a'ssoldiering for her Majesty the Queen.  The bravest wog what I ever knew was the beastie, Gunga Din."   I crack up!

Here he is with his Samurai warrior helmet (and a Dollar Tree sword).  I joke that we use it as a salad bowl when he's not wearing it.  He brings this one out when he watches movies about Japan.

I hope you'll leave a word of praise for our Heavenly Father in the comments below - even if it's just one word - Haleluyah!  Let's praise Him together every day during April.

Thankful Thursday - People Who Make Me Laugh

I'm so thankful for people with a good sense of humor.  My daughter and son-in-love are just such people.  On our recent trip to the Smoky Mountain, we bought them these sleep shorts.  His says, "Wanna Moose Around?"  Her shorts say, "Don't Moose With Me."  Amanda's face says it all.  It cracks me up every time I look at this picture.  I asked them if they'd mind me sharing it, and they said, "Sure!"  We also got their son a pair of house slippers with little moose on them, but I forgot to take a picture. (Sad Face...)

Amanda has made me laugh every since she was born with her antics.  Example: "Mama, can black-eye peas see me?"

They were over for a visit last week, and Jona-FUN made us laugh . . . as always.  He comes up with some of the most profound statements.  They're more like lectures, really, that begin with, "Did you know . . ."  or  "Actually...".and usually involve something to do with science, technology, engineering, or math.  Here's an example:

Him:  "GiGi, did you know that the square root of (I can't remember the number) is . . . "  followed by a lecture about math.
Me:  "Wow . . ." (All of this is way over my head, so I just nod because I can't think of anything else to say.)

Amanda said it's not a bit funny when he wakes her up at 5:30 AM to explain all of this because he's just so excited.  She's excited, too, but would appreciate it more if he told her after coffee..

His father, William, told us that morning epiphanies are common with Jona-FUN.  Recently, he was awakened at 6:00 AM with Jona-FUN's request to explain the fourth dimension.  William is fully competent to explain it, but told his son it was a bit too early and he had to have coffee first.

Having a good sense of humor is priceless when living with a brainiac.  G-d surely gave him the best parents in the world.  They're doing a great job of homeschooling him.

And this memory always makes me laugh:

Me: "Jona-FUN, what makes you happy?"
Him:  (After a long period of thought.) "Conveyor belts."
Me:  "Why is that?"
Him:  "Just the way they work, moving one object to another place, makes me happy."

He loves to play chess with his pawpaw (Rabbi Jem) and beats him on a regular basis.  Jem gave him this book (Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess) and button and I don't think he'd have been more excited if he'd gotten a new Nerf gun.

When they play,  Jem spends time teaching him about chess moves, and showing him how to beat his opponent.  Jona-FUN listens, and then quickly beats Jem with a whole different move. I always laugh about it.  Jem not so much, and that makes me laugh, too.

My sweet husband makes me laugh every day of my life.  I've never known anybody who sits around thinking up jokes.  That's what he does, along with silly songs and funny stories.  People at the synagogue ask me if he's always so hilarious and fun-loving.  I tell them, "This is his serious time!"

Both Rabbi Jem and William love Monty Python type humor.  In example, they play a game where they choose an object and then ad-lib funny stuff like pretending a banana is a telephone.  Then the next person has to make the banana something different.  When they get together, they are always cutting up, making jokes, and playing off  each other.  Jona-FUN is following in their footsteps with the same sense of humor because he always joins in the jocularity.

What are you thankful for this week, Gail-Friends?

Thankful Thursday - Silliness

no, it's not a Samurai sword

They say laughter is good medicine, right?  Well, on hubby's birthday, we laughed hard and long, and the medicine was sweet.

Not happy that he had to stop eating for the picture.

Jem got the You Are Special Today plate that always comes out on birthdays.

And he enjoyed his favorite meal -- chicken tortellini alfredo with peas and broccoli.  Jonathan loves it, too. Yes, my grandson can come to the table without a shirt.  This is GiGi's chance to spoil him, and I take advantage of it. (Big smile) Besides, the first thing he does when he comes over is take off his shoes, then his socks, and then his shirt. I do draw the line at the shorts, though.

He helped PawPaw blow out the candles.

And then, the cake was cut.  It's his favorite -- German chocolate, with vanilla ice cream.  This was his at-home cake.  He was a blessed man to have not one, but two, birthday cakes.  The cake below was his cake for the synagogue birthday party.

After dinner, we retired to the living room to recover from the sugar overload.  Well, they had to recover.  I don't eat sugar, so I was good.

William showed us a new phone app called Face App.  It takes your picture and then changes your face to younger, older, fancy, and the opposite sex.  It was hilarious, and we laughed ourselves silly taking pictures and seeing the different changes.  Here's Amanda's (her middle name is Silly):

and here's mine:

My old picture looked the same as my present face, so I guess they couldn't add any more wrinkles. How about those new teeth they gave me?  And how do I look as a man with a mustache?  (That's why I keep it waxed!)  Ahhh...we laughed so hard.

And then, PawPaw decided it was time for him to teach Jon the Hawaiian dance, this accompanied by his rendition of a Hawaiian song.  Enjoy and have a good laugh!

I'm so thankful for my husband who makes me laugh every day, my daughter and son-in-love who are crazy funny, and my grandson, who has a hilarious, very dry sense of humor.  Every week he brings us jokes, dissertations, and quips that keep us laughing.

What are you thankful for this week, Gail-Friends?

Thankful Thursday is my day to focus on and be thankful for all of the good things in my life.

Gratitude - Day 2 - Laughter

My husband, Rabbi Jem
(Day 2 of my series on Gratitude for the month of November)

I am so thankful for laughter, and especially that I'm married to a man who makes me laugh!

The picture above is of the oldest rabbi of Israel (aka my husband Jem).  He visited our Purim service, since he was in the area on a fishing vacation.  Jem loves to "cut up" as we call it in the South.  He is always coming up with jokes and mischief to make me and others laugh.

Laughter and joy are a big part of Judaism, and Jem loves to tell jokes at our services.  Someone asked me, "Is he always like this?"  I answered, "This is where he's MOST serious!"  Oh, the stories I could tell of his shenanigans.  He is delightful and wakes up happy every morning....and he doesn't even drink coffee!! (Unlike myself)

He brings so much joy to the nursing home where my mama lives.  He brings jokes and stories and laughter to brighten their days, and everybody (staff included) loves to see him coming.

Laughter is so much a part of our life, and at our age, that's important.  We folks in the Golden Years can tend to get focused on ourselves and our aches and pains, you know.  Speaking of that, I read something this morning that I think will make you laugh, so enjoy!

1. The nicest thing about the future is. . . that it always starts tomorrow.

2. Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

3. If you don't have a sense of humor, you probably don't have any sense at all.

4. Seat belts are not as confining as wheelchairs.

5. A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water.

6. How come it takes so little time for a child who is afraid of the dark to become a teenager who wants to stay out all night?

7. Business conventions are important because they demonstrate how many people a company can afford to operate without.

8. Why is it that at class reunions you feel younger than everyone else looks?

9. Scratch a cat . . . and you will have a permanent job.

10. No one has more driving ambition than the teenage boy who wants to buy a car.

11. There are no new sins; the old ones just get more publicity.

12. There are worse things than getting a call for a wrong number at 4 a.m. - like, it could be the right number.

13. No one ever says "It's only a game" when their team is winning.

14. I've reached the age where 'happy hour' is a nap.

15. Be careful about reading the fine print. . . . there's no way you're going to like it.

16. The trouble with bucket seats is that not everybody has the same size bucket.

17. Do you realize that, in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos? (And rap music will be the Golden Oldies!)

18. Money can't buy happiness -- but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Cadillac than in a Yugo.

19. After 60, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you're probably dead.

20. Always be yourself because the people that matter don't mind . . . . and the ones that mind don't matter.

21. Life isn't tied with a bow . . . . . . . . but it's still a gift
*****************
And I say, Amain to that last one.  I am a blessed woman and so thankful to be alive.
What makes you laugh?
