Sabbath Music - Shimcha Kadosh

What a busy week I've had, with Rabbi Jem being sick, and our anniversary celebrations.  I'm looking forward to a rest-FULL, worship-FULL, and wonder-FULL Shabbat.  I need to be revived, Gail-Friends.

This beautiful song always fills me with peace.  Sit still, close your eyes, and listen to the beautiful words.  First you'll hear the Hebrew, then the English.  Raise your hands and worship HIM.   The Word says He inhabits our praises, so He will draw near as you worship.  Oh, what a blessing to be in His sweet presence.

Shimcha Kadosh by Barry and Batya Segal

I hope you enJOY it, and have a peace-FULL Shabbat and week ahead.

Thankful Thursday - Anniversary Week

On last week's Shabbat, we had lots of children under the tallit for the blessing.  I'm always happy and thankful for that.

After the service, the congregation gave Rabbi Jem and me a surprise celebration party for our tenth wedding anniversary.  The love and food and gifts were overflowing and overwhelming to us both.  We have such a loving, close mishpocha and we are so thankful for them.  I didn't take pictures, so I'll have to share some later, after I get some from those who photographed it.

We are celebrating all week, and today we went to a nice waterfront restaurant for dinner.  We took a selfie, but forgot to take our selfie stick.  It is what it is.

And  then Jem took a picture of me. .

and the huge (12 inch long) koi in the pond

I'm thankful for the great backyard shots I got this week.

I'm always thankful when the cardinals stop by

A dove and a woodpecker sharing the suet

My sunflowers are beginning to bloom

Jemima Puddle Duck's face is this lizard's favorite place to sun bathe

Hopefully, I'll have more time to post, and more joys to share, next Thursday.  The anniversary joys especially.  We have lots planned for our celebration this week.

What are you thankful for this week, Gail-Friends?

Thankful Thursday is my day to focus on and be grateful for all the good things in my life.

Wisdom Wednesdays - Bitter or Sweet

http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=OIP.Mb24880efb3e98d7e817f6f8bc9702873o0&w=116&h=133&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0&r=0

I've been meditating on the sweetness of my life lately.  I can't remember when I've had such a long stretch of rest and peace.  This is a contrast because most of my life was filled with unrest and troubles.  I can remember always being the one who needed prayer for some problem or another.  I'm grateful for those times, though, because I learned great lessons while going through them.  Because of that, I can relate to people who are going through hard things.

This passage from the Torah taught me some good lessons about hard times this week:

22 Moshe led Isra’el onward from the Sea of Suf. They went out into the Shur Desert; but after traveling three days in the desert, they had found no water.
23 They arrived at Marah but couldn’t drink the water there, because it was bitter. This is why they called it Marah [bitterness].
24 The people grumbled against Moshe and asked, “What are we to drink?”
25 Moshe cried to Adonai; and Adonai showed him a certain piece of wood, which, when he threw it into the water, made the water taste good. There Adonai made laws and rules of life for them, and there he tested them.
26 He said, “If you will listen intently to the voice of Adonai your G-d, do what He considers right, pay attention to His mitzvot and observe his laws, I will not afflict you with any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians; because I am Adonai your Healer.” (Exodus 15:22-26)

The bitter water speaks of the troubles in our lives.  Everybody has them.  Those troubles come to make us thirsty (needy for G-d).

The wood (from a tree) was thrown into the water, and the water became sweet.  The wood speaks of the Tree of Life (G-d's ways / laws / truths).  When we apply them to our lives, we will be satisfied (sweetness).

Along with quenching their immediate thirst, ADONAI gave them His Laws, and also a wonderful promise.  He said IF...don't miss that word..."IF you will"
  • "listen intently to the voice of ADONAI, your G-d"
  • "do what He considers right"
  • "pay attention to His mitzvot (rules)"
  • "observe His laws"
When hard times come into our lives, we must cling to and obey His Word and listen to His voice intently.  By doing this, we learn more of His love for us, and He teaches us lessons as we go through the challenge.  The bitter waters become sweet, Gail-Friends.

Continuing the passage, we see that when we obey Him in "all" things, He will also give us an another amazing blessing. He will keep us free of diseases, or give us health.  What a wonderful promise, Gail-Friends.  Did you know this?  Have you ever been taught this?

Having grown up in the Christian church, I can testify that I was not taught this.  As a matter of fact, I was taught to ignore "the Law" because Yeshua (Jesus) set believers free of that awful fate.  But, now I know different.  Following His laws makes life sweet, like the finest honey.
http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=OIP.Mb24880efb3e98d7e817f6f8bc9702873o0&w=116&h=133&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0&r=0
Did you know His laws include instructions about our health? There are many of them.  Those laws include:
  • food to eat
  • food to avoid
  • cleanliness about food
  • how to grow and harvest the food we eat
  • how to treat animals
  • how to slaughter animals for food
  • rules for personal hygiene
  • how to think, because thoughts affect our bodies
  • how to speak, because words affect our health
I could go on, but I challenge you to seek out these truths for yourself.  It's a very interesting and enlightening study, and one that will be a blessing to you.  Our loving Heavenly Father left so much to bring us good and to make life sweet.

Sabbath Music - Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Our wonderful Heavenly Father has set aside a special time for us.  He calls us to come aside from the world and turn our focus to Him.

I don't know about you, Gail-Friends, but I love to turn off the media (radio, tv and internet) and not have to see and hear all the craziness going on.  I need this time to refresh and renew myself for the week ahead.

Those around us need the truth and mercy we are called to share.

This week's song is perfect for these times.  Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, by Randy Overstreet.

Thankful Thursday - Ten Golden Years

On Friday, we'll celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary.  Actually, we'll celebrate all week long (because that's how we do it).  I'll share with you about our celebration later.

I'm so thankful for my sweet husband and for the past ten years.  G-d put us together, and he has been a wonderful husband and friend.  I'm also grateful to have my own personal rabbi.  What a blessing to have a husband who is a mentor, a teacher, a counselor, and a living example of how to obey the Torah!

Before we married, I'd read the passage in I Corinthians 13 and think that nobody could ever do all that.  Well, Gail-Friends, he does all that and more.  He is consistently loving twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.  Even more, he is a role model for me and every person with whom he comes in contact.  He's good with children, teenagers, and old people, too.

He's hilariously funny and makes me laugh every day.  A member of our congregation asked me if he's always so jovial.  I laughed and said, "This is his serious side."  Everything that happens is fodder for the jokes he makes up.

Here's a picture of him during his Navy days, which is when we met, over forty years ago.

And here we are on our wedding day, ten years ago.

We're fond of saying that we were like the Jews who wandered through the desert for forty years before we found the promised land (each other).  How G-d brought us together is a beautiful story, and I'm so very grateful He did.

What are you grateful for this week, Gail-Friends?

Thankful Thursday is my day to focus on and be thankful for the good things in my life.

Sabbath Music - Wonderful Merciful Savior

I hope you've had a blessed week, Gail-Friends, and I hope those of you who are mothers enjoyed being loved on by your children.  If you were disappointed because you weren't remembered, turn to your Comforter, our wonder-FULL, mercy-FULL Savior, Yeshua the Messiah.  The same goes for those who are longing to be mothers, and those who have lost children to death or separation.  Pour out your heart to Him.  He cares and He will heal your hurting heart.

Whether you're happy or sad, it's the Sabbath.  It's His special set-apart time just for you.  Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.  Turn away from your problems and put on the garment of praise!  I hope you will be blessed by this beauty-FULL song by Selah - Wonderful Merciful Savior.

Thankful Thursday - The Golden Years

So much to be thank-FULL for this week.  The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and I am just filled with JOY, Gail-Friends.  This poem is just right for this wonder-FULL time of the year:

And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.
~Percy Bysshe Shelley.

My sweet hubby and I were on a trip to Barberville for the Spring Fling event, when we saw these beauty-FULL flowers growing along the sides of the road and in the median.  The photos don't do justice to the brightness of the pinks, lavenders, and crimsons spread out for miles.

We really enjoyed the singing, music and dancing at the Barberville event.  They had some very entertaining story tellers, too.  I especially loved hearing the hammered dulcimer concert.

On the way back, I asked Jem if he'd stop and let me get some of the field flowers to plant in the yard.  He's always so obliging.

Isn't he just the sweetest man in the whole, wide world???

Yes, he is, and I'm the most blessed woman, too.  The past ten years have been the best and happiest of my life.  Yes, these truly are the "Golden Years" in more ways than one.  I love being Mrs. Golden.

He's been hard at work on our yard, sprucing it up for spring and summer.

These are the two new birdbaths he added to our collection.  I love them both.  The neighborhood cats love the lower one and use it for their own drinking spot every morning.

He even painted Jemima Puddle Duck.  Doesn't she look pretty?

Mr. Golden also blessed me with two bouquets of flowers for Mother's Day.  This one was on my breakfast tray, along with the pancakes he made.  I was a pampered princess for sure.

I loved the mason jar with flowers, and thought at first that he'd used one from our pantry.  When I looked closer, I saw that it was a special one that said "Jardin" (garden in French).  I absolutely love that jar, and resolve to always keep it full of fresh flowers!

So far, May has been a wonderful month, and our anniversary isn't even here yet.  I'm so thankful for all the blessings poured out so far.

What are you thankful for this week?

Blessings to you all, Gail-Friends.

Sabbath Music - Reach Out to Jesus

For two weeks prior to Passover, I was sick and unable to attend the synagogue for our Erev Shabbat service, so I held a worship service at home.  The photo above was taken on our patio and shows the candles, siddur (prayer book), wine and bread.  This night, I was really sad, and lonely because I really missed being with our mishpacha (family) and having the fresh-baked challah provided by one of our members.

At sundown, I lit the candles and began to say the prayers out loud.  An amazing thing happened at that moment, when a beautiful red cardinal flew into the yard and perched on a nearby tree.  First, I should explain that in our service, we have responsive readings.  The rabbi or cantor reads, and then the congregation responds.  Well, on this Sabbath night, I began the first reading, and when I finished, the cardinal sang.  All the way through the readings, he responded with a song at the end of each and every prayer. Then, when the prayers were finished, he flew away.

I tell you, Gail-Friends, it was a holy time.  I know Hashem sent that little bird to join me in worship and to encourage me in my time alone at home.  What a blessing.  What a JOY.  G-d is so very good to me.  This is just one of the many times He has sent birds to minister to me, and I truly was blessed on that Sabbath evening.  In my illness and sadness, and in my worship alone, Hashem took my hand and comforted me with His sweet presence.

This song was very special to me during my time of sickness:  Reach Out to Jesus, sung by Elvis. The words brought me great comfort and I hope they bless you, too.  (If the embed doesn't work, you can click on this LINK to enjoy the song.)

National Day of Prayer 2016

Today is the National Day of Prayer, and this is my prayer from my heart:

"Father, I praise You for the great blessing of being born in America. I was born in the 1950's and thank you for the peace our country has known ever since I've been in this world. I praise you that our country was founded on the principles of Your Holy Word. I remember how I used to hear the Bible every morning in school and how we prayed at the beginning of each school day. Forgive me for not standing up for You when the Bible and prayer were removed from our schools. Forgive me for not being involved in the selection of G-dly men and women for public offices on the local, state and national level. Forgive me for thinking that our country would always be a nation under Your holy laws. My indifference and neglect of my duties as a citizen have led to the downfall of our country. Forgive me for not praying every day for my country. Forgive me for disobeying Your Word by thinking it's really not important to obey everything You say. Forgive me for listening to preachers and teachers who told me to disobey your commandments, especially the commandment about Your Sabbath. You said, "above all my Sabbaths you shall keep." I'm so sorry for the part I've played in the demise of my country. I'm sorry for being afraid to speak up for You because of the threats of people and the government about politically correct words. Forgive me for not diligently teaching Your Truth to others. Help me to be fearless in telling people Your truth because it sets us free and gives us peace and comfort. I thank You that Jesus paid for these sins, and I praise You for His blood that paid the price. Father, I resolve to obey You in all things and to diligently study Your Word so I can know what "wicked ways" means because you said, "If my people who are called by My Name will humble themselves and pray, and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and heal their land." I will do this, and Father, I pray for You to have mercy on America. I know it can only come through repentance and a return to obedience to Your Word. Your Word and Your Ways are LIFE, and I pray for every one who reads this to repent, and turn to You, accept that You are the one, true G-d and our only hope is in You." Amen

I invite you to add your own prayer in the comments.

Mishpacha at Passover

At the seder, we remember.
As promised, here are some photos from our Passover seder last week. To learn more about Passover and the meaning of the seder, click on this LINK.

The photo above is of LaVonne and her husband, David.  LaVonne is an amazing artist, and very gifted in needlecraft arts.  She designed and hand embroidered this Torah ark cover for the synagogue and presented it to us at the seder.  The cover is embellished with tiny pearls, and is truly an awe-inspiring work of art.

We had a full house, with every chair filled.
Spending time with family (mishpacha) is priceless, right?

We began the evening with my lighting the candles
and reciting the prayer in Hebrew and English.

Kagen read the four questions, and was quite the entertainer.
His antics kept everybody laughing.

The affikomen was hidden, and Taylor found it.  Then she had to haggle with Rabbi to redeem it.  She's smiling because she got $15.00.  What negotiating skills!

As part of the seder, we always set a place for Elijah,
and the children look out the door to see if he's coming.

For Elijah

The children didn't see him that night.  Each year, we pray Elijah comes soon, and that Hashem will speed the return of our Messiah, Yeshua.

We remembered, worshipped, prayed, sang, laughed and, of course, we ate.  We had tons of food.  After all, Passover is a commanded feast.  And we had four different kugels for dessert -- cinnamon, raisin, peach, and strawberry-chocolate chip!  I think this will be a new tradition at our synagogue because they were such a hit.  A big thank you was given to the ladies who cooked them, and for all who helped set up, brought food, and helped clean up after the seder. That's what mishpacha does.

After the seder, we danced.

Rabbi Jem loves to dance and I do, too.

Rabbi dancing with Abigail.

Abigail is four years old, and she is a hoot.  She talks constantly and says the funniest things.  I asked her mother if she's keeping a record of her hilarious observations.  She said, "No, because I'd be writing all day long!"  That's true!  I love, love, love being around children.  They just make life so wonder-FULL!!!!  Every one of the children in our congregation is a joy to be with.  Most are home-schooled, and extremely smart, too.

I hope you had a wonderful Passover with your mishpacha,
and I'd love to hear about your Passover celebration.
