Getting Ready for Hurricane Ian

We're getting ready for Hurricane Ian. Battening down the hatches as the old saying goes. Having lived in Florida all of my life, I've been through so many I've lost count.  You can read about my recent experiences at this link:   hurricanes

And here's a post about how to get ready when a hurricane is coming your way.  hurricane prep

But, the most important thing about my hurricane experience is the comfort I've found in Psalm 91. my hurricane psalm

I'm praying for all in the path of the storm.  Most likely, Ian will affect the whole state of Florida.  So, please join me in those prayers, Gail-Friends.  Let me know if you have any special prayer requests.

Blessings to you all, with love.

Thankful Thursday - Hurricane Praises & Chocolate Truffles!

THANK YOU FOR THE PRAYERS. We are praising God because Dorian passed us by last night and today (DOWN FROM A CATEGORY 5 TO A 2) and we had very little rain, no yard or home damage from wind. AND, we didn't lose power!   There was lots of damage to the beaches and the sea turtle nests, but not to people or homes. He's riding close to the coast a he goes north, so keep praying friends.   Our prayer was for him to turn east and to lose strength!  Haleluyah!

My dear husband and our son-in-love worked like Turks to get ready for the storm.  We couldn't have done it without dear William.  After William finished boarding up their house and helping his parents, he came to help Jem with the new generator.  They worked for hours on it  setting it up, adding oil,  and letting it run. Then when it was time to drain the oil, the nut where the oil drains would not come off because the tool to release it was not in the box.  They tried all of Jem's tools and asked a neighbor if he had one -- but no luck.  William finally found a tool somewhere, somehow and they got it done!!

I was amazed at the endurance and strength of my sweet husband - who just turned seventy-three.  He worked from morning till night on Monday boarding up and moving plants and moving the stuff on the patio to the shed. At the end of the day, his poor feet had huge blisters. But, even as tired as he was, he saw our neighbor struggling to move something and went across the street to offer his help.   He's a hard-working man and I admire him so much.  He never gives up and never gives in until the jobs is done -- and done well.  All of this is done with NO complaining.  What a man! Can you tell I love him?  I love my son-in-love, too.  Men like those two are very rare and I'm thankful for them both.

We started preparing for Dorian last Wednesday - that's a whole week, Gail-Friends!  While organizing the shed and cleaning off the patio, I realized we still have too much STUFF!  This, after cleaning out and donating three van loads of STUFF before, during, and after the garage re-do.  So, the van is filling up once again.  We both worked hard getting ready in the house and the yard, and I told Jem, "This is why old people move to condos."

God was so good to us in not letting anything happen to us or our neighbors and we give him all the praise and thanks.

The weatherman is talking today about more storms in the Atlantic that could be headed our way.  I told him, "Shut your mouth!"  (Yes, I talk to the TV.) Those memories of three back-to-back hurricanes in 2004 are still very fresh!  It could happen, Gail-Friends, so,we came through Dorian with resolve to do two things:

1.  To talk to our neighbor about cutting down the three pine trees adjacent to our front yard, one of which leans toward Golden Cottage.  That was our biggest concern.

2.  To purchase storm shutters that stay on the windows all the time.  Putting plywood up is a tough job.

While we were waiting for the storm to arrive and then move north, I was struck by a burst of energy and a burning desire for ORDER!!!  I cleaned cabinets and closets like a mad woman.  I organized my office files and decades of  family photographs, records, and cassette tapes.  So, thanks to Dorian, I'm super organized.

I also decided to color my hair and give myself RED highlights.  Then I decided to cut it.  All of this was NOT a good idea, so I'm not sharing any pictures.  My daughter, Amanda, is going to try to  help me tomorrow.

While we waited (and listened to the weather people go on and on)  I went through recipes and found  a wonderful treat I have to share with you.  During hurricanes in the past, I ate crunchy junk food and chocolate -- but not this year!  I loaded up with raw veggies with hummus, triple zero yogurt, and THIS Trim Healthy Mama treat:

Easy-Peasy to make, too!

the picture and recipe makes seven large marble sized truffles

TWO MINUTE CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES from My Montana Kitchen

I'm telling you, Gail-Friends, I could kiss the feet of this woman.  Jem ate Snickers and I ate these wonderful treats, which are sugar-free, low-carb, gluten-free, dairy-free, keto, and THM-S.  You have to visit her blog because she has tons of good, healthy recipes. The blog post has the ingredients and instructions and, like she said in her post, don't be ashamed if you eat it with a spoon right out of the bowl.  I asked Jem if he'd like to try it and he loved it.  So, I made a double batch the next day.  (The Trim Healthy Mama books are available on their website. They also have a Facebook group that's very helpful.)

I was determined to stay on track with my health goals through the hurricane and I praise Hashem for giving me the strength to eat right.  I've lost sixteen pounds over the past four months and I feel fabulous!  I've been exercising four or five days a week, too.  I do two pool days and two gym days weekly, and then walk on the weekend.  I've been working with a personal trainer and she has taught me so much.  I told Jem I think I'm getting addicted to exercise because I really missed going over the past week. I still haven't experienced those endorphins people talk about, though.

Please continue to pray for those in the path of Dorian as he heads north.  Let's just pray he heads further east and fizzles out completely.  And pray for those in the Bahamas, too.  The reports are horrific - people were killed and thousands of homes are completely destroyed.  They're going to need lots of help, so let's pray about what we can do to assist them.

Blessings and have a good week.  Let me know if I can pray for you.

Thankful Thursday - Psalm 91 - My Hurricane Psalm

A big storm is coming, so today we, and all of Florida, are preparing for Hurricane Dorian.  I'm praying, too, and I'm believing Adonai will hear my prayers for Him to steer the storm to the east.  It's a monster storm as of Thursday evening and we already have plenty of supplies because we stay ready.

We did go to Aldi to get a few items, and I snapped this photo:

That whole cold case was empty except for the salad.  I laughed.  People have their priorities!  And during a hurricane, I guess salad isn't high on the list.  It is on mine, and I'm well stocked!  Be sure to check out my past posts, photos, and tips for going through hurricanes HERE.

I've been through many hurricanes in my long life here in Florida.  The first was Hurricane Dora in 1964, which was a category 3.  I was a teenager and remember the high winds and the eerie silence when the eye passed over our house.  The next day, our yard and street were flooded almost up to the front door.  Thanks be to Adonai, we had no major damage.

I'll never forget 2004, which was my most serious experience with hurricanes because I went through three   I survived Charlie, Frances and Jean.  On August 13, Charlie came in on Florida's west coast as a category 4, but weakened as it headed toward the east coast.  No damage and no loss of power for me, praise Adonai!   He left behind lots of debris in my yard that got piled up for the trash truck to pick up.  The pick-up was delayed because there was so much for them to pick up in our area.  I was having an engagement party for my daughter, Amanda, and kept praying (and believing) the pick-up would be gone by the party.  It was HUGE!  Praise Hashem, they picked it up the morning of the party!  Haleluyah!

Hurricane Frances, a category 2, came next -- THREE WEEKS LATER!  She hit our coast with 80 mph winds, so it was serious. Thankfully, winds had diminished from 105.  We got 15 inches of rain from old Frances and she left behind terrible destruction. Once again, I had no damage...only yard debris,  and did not lose power.

And then, THREE WEEKS LATER, Hurricane Jeanne hit as a category 3.  I'll never forget it.  I was at work, and someone told us to go home because another hurricane was headed our way!  Thankfully, I had left my storm shutters up from Frances' visit.  Jeanne was a bad one and did great damage to our coast.  Amazingly, I had no damage and did not lose power. Lots of debris was left behind, though.

We were threatened by Hurricane Ivan during that month, too, but thankfully it passed us by.  I was prepared for it, though, because I left those hurricane shutters up through November which is the end of hurricane season.

Jem, however, has been through two catastrophic hurrcanes before we were married - Ivan in 2004, and Katrina in 2005.  Katrina was the worst.  He was living in Alabama at the Magee Farm / Museum, where he was curator.  The house was 100 years old, and withstood the storm like a champ.  No damage and no problems.  Haleluyah!

I give all the praise to Adonai for his protection and provision.  He was with me all the way.  I was single at the time, and my future son-in-love came both times to help me put storm shutters on my windows.  I'm so thankful for William.

In 2016, we went through Hurricane Matthew, which was a category 3 that rode north on our coast.  There was a lot of damage to our area, but we praise Adonai that He was with us.  Because the storm hovered twenty miles off our coast, the damage was not nearly what it could have been.  We were so blessed once again  not to have any serious damage and only lost power for a few hours.  Our wonderful son-in-love loaned us a generator, but by the time Jem and he got it set up, the electricity came back on.  Haleluyah!  We did lose enough shingles to get a new roof paid for by our insurance company.  Thankfully, we did not have any leaks.  That was a big blessing, really, because the roof was due for replacement.  Another big Haleluyah!

Through each and every hurricane, I prayed for God to protect all in this area.  I also meditated on Psalm 91, which I call my hurricane psalm.  Hashem is so good and faithful to provide us with comfort in times of peril.  I'm thankful for the peace I've felt in the midst of every single one of the storms I've been through.  I know His shield of protection covers me and I can rest easy.

So, if you're going through Hurricane Dorian, or any other storm, this psalm is for you:

1 You who live in the shelter of ‘Elyon,
who spend your nights in the shadow of Shaddai,
2
who say to Adonai, “My refuge! My fortress!
My God, in whom I trust!” —
3
he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter
and from the plague of calamities;
4
he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his truth is a shield and protection.
You will not fear the terrors of night
or the arrow that flies by day,
6
or the plague that roams in the dark,
or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.
7
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand;
but it won’t come near you.
8
Only keep your eyes open,
and you will see how the wicked are punished.
9
For you have made Adonai, the Most High,
who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.
10
No disaster will happen to you,
no calamity will come near your tent;
11
for he will order his angels to care for you
and guard you wherever you go.
12
They will carry you in their hands,
so that you won’t trip on a stone.
13
You will tread down lions and snakes,
young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.
14
“Because he loves me, I will rescue him;
because he knows my name, I will protect him.
15
He will call on me, and I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble.
I will extricate him and bring him honor.
16
I will satisfy him with long life
and show him my salvation.”

Blessings and have a good week.  Let me know if I can pray for you.

Are You Afraid? Are You Weary? A Song For You

From 2016 - but praying for His hand to protect us again

If you've just gone through Hurricane Harvey. . . or if you're afraid of Hurricane Irma. . . or if you are weary from preparations or cleanup and think you can't go on, please take heart, Gail-Friends.  I pray this post will give you hope.  With G-d's help, we can get through anything.

The photo above is the board I used on my window when I went through three hurricanes back to back -- Charlie, Frances, and Jeanne.  We used them last year for Hurricane Matthew.  We're using them now in preparation for Irma.  Back then I prayed for His protection and meditated on Psalm 91.  That's what we're doing this week, too, while we work to get our home and yard ready to ride out the storm.  It's a lot of work , and we're tired, but we're calling on His strength and trusting Him to protect us.

Have you ever been so weary that you couldn't take another step?  Maybe you feel that way right now.  Take heart, dear one.  You will get through, and He will give you His strength to press on.  All you have to do is ask Him.  Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.

If you're bone-tired and spirit weary, I hope this song will minister to you, as it has me, many, many times. His Strength Is Perfect by Michael W. Smith

The song was introduced to me about five years ago.  My oldest daughter was in the hospital emergency room in critical condition.  I hadn't slept in almost twenty-four hours. While her husband arranged for her admittance,  I sat with my head back against the wall, wondering how I'd be able to hold my head up one minute longer.  All I could pray was, "G-d, help me hold on."

A security guard walked into the room and sat a radio on the small desk near my chair.  He turned it on and walked away.  This is the song I heard, and it was as if my Heavenly Father wrapped His arms around me.  As I listened to the words, I felt His strength flow into my tired body and exhausted spirit.  I was renewed, and able to continue for several more hours until my daughter was admitted.

I learned a valuable lesson through that hard experience.  I learned about His enabling strength.  It is great, and it's available when we ask Him.  I'm so thankful He taught me this.  As with every hard thing I've gone through in life, I know something about HIM that no one can ever take away from me.

Please let me know if you need prayer right now for anything.  I'll be blessed to pray for you, Gail-Friends.

Pray and Prepare

One of our storm shutters from 2004 - when we had three back to back hurricanes
A friend sent me this info.  I've been preparing for hurricanes for many years, but there are some here I've never thought of.  I've always lived by the motto:  "Better to be safe than sorry."
  Pray and Prepare

Regarding cell phone, and towers being down:  you can download the ZELLO app to your phones, which enables you to use them as walkie talkies.  Folks used this in Texas when towers were down.  If you do this, don't forget to share your USER ID information with those with whom you need to keep in contact..

1. Charge any device that provides light. Laptops, tablets, cameras, video
cameras, and old phones. Old cell phones can still be used for dialing 911.
Charge external battery back ups.

2. Wash all trash cans, big and small, and fill with water for flushing
toilets. Line outdoor trash cans with trash bags, fill with water and store
in the garage. Add bleach to sterilize.

3. Fill every tub and sink with water. Cover sinks with Saran Wrap to keep
it from collecting dust. Fill washing machine and leave lid up to store
water.

4. Fill old empty water bottles and other containers with water and keep
near sinks for washing hands.

5. Fill every Tupperware with water and store in the freezer. These will help
keep food cold longer and serve as a backup water supply.

6. Fill drinking cups with water and cover with Saran Wrap. Store as many as
possible in the fridge. The rest you can store on the counter and use first
before any water bottles are opened. Ice is impossible to find after the
storm.

7. Reserve fridge space for storing tap water and keep the sealed water
bottles on the counter.

8. Cook any meats in advance and other perishable foods. You can freeze
cooked food. Hard boil eggs for snacks for the first day without power.

9. Be well hydrated before the storm hits and avoid salty foods that make
you dehydrated.

10. Wash all dirty clothes and bed sheets. Anything dirty will smell without
the A/C, you may need the items, and with no A/C, you'll be sweating a lot.
You're going to want clean sheets.

11. Toss out any expiring food, clean cat litter boxes, empty all trash cans
in the house, including bathrooms. Remove anything that will cause an odor
when the A/C is off. If you don't have a trash day pickup before the storm,
find a dumpster.

12. Bring in any yard decor, secure anything that will fly around, secure
gates, bring in hoses, potted plants, etc. Bring in patio furniture and
grills.

13. Clean your environment so you have clear, easy escape routes. Even if
that means temporarily moving furniture to one area.

14. Scrub all bathrooms so you are starting with a clean odor free
environment. Store water filled trash cans next to each toilet for flushing.

15. Place everything you own that is important and necessary in a backpack
or small file box that is easy to grab. Include your wallet with ID, phone,
hand sanitizer, snacks, etc. Get plastic sleeves for important documents.

16. Make sure you have cash on hand.

17. Stock up on pet food and fill up bowls of water for pets.

18. Refill any medications. Most insurance companies allow for 2 emergency
refills per year.

19. Fill your propane tanks. You can heat soup cans, boil water, make
coffee, and other stuff besides just grilling meat. Get an extra, if
possible.

20. Drop your A/C in advance and lower temperatures in your fridges.

21. Gather all candles, flashlights, lighters, matches, batteries, and other
items and keep them accessible.

22. Clean all counters in advance. Start with a clean surface. Buy Clorox
Wipes for cleaning when there is no power. Mop your floors and vacuum. If
power is out for 10 days, you'll have to live in the mess you started with.

23. Pick your emergency safe place such as a closet under the stairs. Store
the items you'll need in that location for the brunt of the storm. Make a
hand fan for when the power is out.

24. Shower just before the storm is scheduled to hit.

25. Keep baby wipes next to each toilet. Don't flush them. It's not the time
to risk clogging your toilet!

26. Run your dishwasher, don't risk having dirty smelly dishes and you need
every container for water! Remember you'll need clean water for brushing
your teeth, washing yourself, and cleaning your hands.

27. Put a small suitcase in your car in case you decide to evacuate. Also
, put at least one jug of water in your car. It will still be there if you
don't evacuate! You don't need to store all water in the house. Remember to
pack for pets as well.

28. Check on all family members, set up emergency back up plans, and check
on elderly neighbors.

29. Remember, pets are family too. Take them with you!

30. Before the storm, unplug all electronics. There will be power surges
during and after the storm.

31. Gas up your car and have a spare gas container for your generator or
your car when you run out.

32. If you can, take a video of your house and contents....walk room to
room--open cabinets/drawers and closets. This will help if you need to make
a claim later. It will show proof of items and help you list all the items
(help your memory, so you don't forget anything)

33.  Freeze a cup of water, place a coin on top after it is frozen...keep
this in your freezer to help you gauge the temperature if the power goes
out. If the coin stays on top, the food is staying frozen. If the coin falls
into the water, the freezer thawed out and most food will likely need to be
thrown away. This is super helpful is you have to leave and come back, as it
may appear everything is still frozen, but if the coin is in the cup--you
will know!!

34.  Finally, anything that you want to try and preserve, but you can't take
with you---place it in a plastic bin and put in your dishwasher, lock the
door---this should make it water tight in case of any water intrusion into
your home. But of course, take all the important/irreplaceable items you
can!!

His Strength Is Perfect

Our hurricane shutters - giving G-d the glory for keeping us safe.

We've just gone through Hurricane Matthew, and many are picking up the pieces after this devastating storm.  We were very blessed to have only minor wind damage  and the loss of a few fence boards. We never lost electricity - Praise the L-rd.

The photo at the beginning of this post is the board I used on my window when I went through three hurricanes back to back -- Charlie, Frances, and Jeanne.  Back then, and this week, I prayed for His protection and meditated on Psalm 91.  I just had to praise the L-rd then, and I'm praising Him now, too.

Golden Pond is underneath all of those wind-damaged elephant ears.
It could have been so much worse.  All around our neighborhood we've seen downed trees, roof damage, and water damage, and many have lost power.  Many are working night and day to fix their homes and yards because of wind and rain damage.

My youngest daughter and son-in-love lost power, had roof and water damage and are removing carpets as I write this post.  We have our grandson with us while they work.  Pray for them, please.  They are exhausted.  And please pray for our community and the many others along the East Coast that have suffered damage from Hurricane Matthew.

Have you ever been so weary that you couldn't take another step?  Maybe you feel that way right now.  Take heart, dear one.  You will get through, and He will give you His strength to press on.  All you have to do is ask Him.  Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.

Pray for those in the path of Hurricane Sandy

As a native Floridian, I' been through many hurricanes, so I've learned to always be prepared.  I know the people in the storm's path are fearful of the unknown.   If you have someone you would like us to pray for by name, please post your prayer request in the comments section below.

Father,  we pray for the people who will be in the path of Hurricane Sandy.  I pray you will help them in their preparations.  I pray you will protect them from harm and destruction of body and property.

Father, I pray for the first responders who will help in the aftermath.  Protect them, and comfort the families they leave behind as they go out to assist others.  I pray for neighbors to help neighbors and pull together for their communities during this stressful time.

Give them awareness of your presence, even in times like these.  I pray they will be comforted by the Psalm that you gave me when I went through four back-to-back hurricanes in 2004.

Psalm 91

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the
L-rd, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My G-d, in Him I will trust.”
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
And from the perilous pestilence.

4 He shall cover you with His feathers,

And under His wings you shall take refuge;

His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,

Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,

Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;

But it shall not come near you.

8 Only with your eyes shall you look,

And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the L-rd, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

10 No evil shall befall you,

Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,

To keep you in all your ways.

12 In their hands they shall bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,

The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble;

I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life I will satisfy him,

And show him My salvation.”
