31 Days of His Wisdom - Day 3 - The Director

This 31 day series will focus on the things I learned from Proverbs, as well as some things from Torah study, and will add in a sprinkling of what I've learned from Judaism. 


Today, I am reading Proverbs 3, and this chapter is full of the benefits of acquiring and obeying wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 is very special to me:

Trust in Adonai with all your heart;
do not rely on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him;
then He will direct your paths.

I have a deck chair with some very special words  painted on the back.  I don't sit in the chair.  I sit across from it, as a reminder that He is in charge.  

A wise woman told me years ago, "G-d leads by stops, as well as starts."  I've never forgotten this.  Sometimes He doesn't move as fast as I think He should, or sometimes what I think should happen doesn't happen.  I've learned, through trial and error, that the stops are for my good.  I trust Him.

31 Days of His Wisdom - Day 2 - Shield

This 31 day series will focus on the things I learned from Proverbs, as well as some things from Torah study, and will add in a sprinkling of what I've learned from Judaism.

Today is October 2, so I am reading Proverbs 2

My son, if you will receive my words
and store my commands inside you,
² paying attention to wisdom
inclining your mind toward understanding —
³ yes, if you will call for insight
and raise your voice for discernment,
⁴ if you seek it as you would silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure —
⁵ then you will understand the fear of Adonai
and find knowledge of God.

⁶ For Adonai gives wisdom;
from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
⁷ He stores up common sense for the upright,
is a shield to those whose conduct is blameless,
⁸ in order to guard the courses of justice
and preserve the way of those faithful to him.
⁹ Then you will understand righteousness, justice,
fairness and every good path.
¹⁰ For wisdom will enter your heart,
knowledge will be enjoyable for you,
¹¹ discretion will watch over you,
and discernment will guard you.

¹² They will save you from the way of evil
and from those who speak deceitfully,
¹³ who leave the paths of honesty
to walk the ways of darkness,
¹⁴ who delight in doing evil
and take joy in being stubbornly deceitful,
¹⁵ from those whose tracks are twisted
and whose paths are perverse.

¹⁶ They will save you from a woman who is a stranger,
from a loose woman with smooth talk,
¹⁷ who abandons the ruler she had in her youth
and forgets the covenant of her God.
¹⁸ Her house is sinking toward death,
her paths lead to the dead.
¹⁹ None who go to her return;
they never regain the path to life.
²⁰ Thus you will walk on the way of good people
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
²¹ For the upright will live in the land,
the pure-hearted will remain there;
²² but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
the unfaithful rooted out of it.

Each time I read through Proverbs, something different jumps out at me.  This is ADONAI quickening His Word to my heart.  

Today, verse seven jumps out at me.  When I obey His Laws, He puts a shield around me.  He protects me.  What a glorious thought.  Beloved Gail-Friends, we live in a day when  lawlessness abounds.  The church has cast off the Law as if it were an out of fashion garment.  But, it is current.  It is a guide for our lives, and verse seven says it shields us.  

Picture a baby bird under the wings of parent.  That is a picture of our protection when we obey His Word.

31 Days of His Wisdom - Day 1

Almost twenty years ago, I knelt in my bedroom and cried out to G-d for wisdom.  Not the wisdom of a denomination, a church, a teacher, and most certainly not the world.  I asked Him to lead me to His truth.  His wisdom.

Ultimately, I was led to Messianic Judaism and to the study of Torah.  Along the way, I began to study the book of Proverbs, reading one chapter per day corresponding to the day of the month.  I gained a great deal of wisdom from this study.  As I look back on my life, I can see where many mistakes could have been avoided had I done that study as a teenager.

Since today is the first day of October, I'll begin this study with Proverbs, the first chapter. Quotations are from The Complete Jewish Bible.


The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David,
king of Isra’el,
² are for learning about wisdom and discipline;
for understanding words expressing deep insight;
³ for gaining an intelligently disciplined life,
doing what is right, just and fair;
⁴ for endowing with caution those who don’t think
and the young person with knowledge and discretion.
⁵ Someone who is already wise
will hear and learn still more;
someone who already understands
will gain the ability to counsel well;
⁶ he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.

⁷ The fear of Adonai is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Don't you think it is interesting that G-d led me to a study of Proverbs?  The first chapter tells me the writings are for that very purpose - to learn wisdom and discipline.

Isn't it interesting that the fear of Adonai is the beginning?   

Fear, mentioned here, is reverence of His holiness, His authority, His majesty.  If one seeks wisdom, one must see Him as One who knows all,  and place Him on the highest pedestal.    

That was the beginning for me:  to realize He has, and is, all wisdom.  

The second part of verse seven says "fools despise wisdom and discipline"  Does not one despise wisdom when one disobeys what it says?
