31 Days of His Wisdom - Day 6 - Innocent Blood

Life Chain Sunday last year

In Proverbs 6, today's reading, I find:

There are six things Adonai hates,
seven which he detests:
17 a haughty look, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that plots wicked schemes,
feet swift in running to do evil,
19 a false witness who lies with every breath,
and him who sows strife among brothers.

Can there be any more innocent blood than a baby killed by abortion?

I think it is amazing that this scripture is in today's passage, because today is Life Chain Sunday.  Our congregation will join many other churches in support of the Pro-Life Cause.  We will stand on the streets holding signs that hopefully will make people think.

Our culture has promoted the lie that a pregnancy is just a bunch of cells.  Oh, beloved, a pregnancy is the life of child.  Common sense will tell you this.

Let me tell you my story of unplanned pregnancies.

My father was one of eleven children.  My mother was one of twelve.  My mother's family had to "adopt out" two children.  My grandfather was a share cropper, and during and after the Depression, times were very hard.  I'm sure it was an extremely difficult decision.  About fifteen years ago, our family was located by my Uncle Albert.  He was overjoyed to find his family.  Aunt Gloria, the other child adopted out, was reared in the same town as some of her siblings and grew up in a loving, wealthy home.

Sadly, abortion has touched my family, too.  This relative suffers great mental problems due to the decision to choose abortion (a kinder, clinical word for murder).

Every year, we read and study the Torah through from Genesis to Deuteronomy.  Each year, our faith is reinforced with the story of G-d's guidance, provision, and protection of the children of Israel.  He led them,  fed them, gave them water, and met every other need.  This, and other stories in the Torah, remind us of how faithful G-d is to us when we trust Him.

I have experienced this over and over again in my life.  G-d will make a way when there seems to be no way if we will trust Him, follow Him, and obey Him.  His Word is LIFE.

Sadly, the opposite is true.  When we turn away, disobey and follow our own way, we reap death.  Each of the women I spoke with experienced death.  Not only the death of the aborted baby, but death in their spirits.

The aftermath of an abortion is like a beautiful piece of furniture with a deep scratch across the surface.  Marred, but still beautiful and still useful.   There is hope.   Peace is possible.

Beloved, if you have had an abortion, you must agree with G-d that abortion is murder.
Ask His forgiveness for your sin.
Receive that forgiveness as an unmerited gift.  Yeshua died and rose again to pay for your sin.
Thank Him for it daily.
Make amends by speaking the truth about abortion.  Share your experience so that others will not go through what you did.

REMEMBER:  You are loved and forgiven.  You are beautiful, and G-d can use you to help other women.
This song is so appropriate to help you or anyone else who is contemplating abortion:

31 Days of His Wisdom - Day 5 - The Sabbath

Shabbat Shalom

Shabbat shalom.  I hope your Sabbath was filled with peace and rest.  Mine began last evening with our Erev Shabbat service at the synagogue, and was spent today in worship, prayer, and in enjoying my backyard.  The days are cooler now, here in Central Florida, and sitting on my patio this morning was perfectly wonderful.

The chapter of the day, Proverbs 5, begins with the wise advice in verses one and two:

 My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
incline your ear to my understanding;
so that you will preserve discretion
and your lips keep watch over knowledge.

 The chapter ends with the reflection:

 For Adonai is watching a man’s ways;
he surveys all his paths.
22 A wicked person’s own crimes will trap him,
he will be held fast by the ropes of his sin.
23 He will die from lack of discipline;
the magnitude of his folly will make him totter and fall.

Do you ever think about verse 21?  Do you realize G-d is watching every thing you do?  He sees everything, and nothing is hidden from His sight.  My view of G-d has changed over the years related to this piece of wisdom.

As a five-year-old child, I thought of G-d as a lightening bolt that would strike me if I did something wrong.  Over the years, that concept has evolved into the recognition of His loving attention to my ways and paths.  He watches me the way a loving father attends to a beloved son.  He has my best interest at heart, and lovingly guides me with my highest good in mind.

Observing the Sabbath is part of His highest good.  I love spending the day in rest, reading,  and sometimes writing. Watching the birds and butterflies in my backyard always renews my strength and spirit.  Meditating on his provision for the many birds that visit reminds me that He will provide me, too.

Sometimes on the Sabbath, my husband and I visit a nearby wildlife refuge and drive along the lagoon, observing the birds, fish and other critters in abundance.  Last weekend, we thought we saw a bear, but it turned out to be a wild mama hog and her two young ones. Being out in G-d's creation and seeing the beauty of His world always refreshes us.

Our two favorite sayings are, "We live in paradise" and "Every day is precious".  Every day and every moment, really, are gifts.  So is the Sabbath, and I thank G-d for His special day of rest.

31 Days of His Wisdom - Day 4 - The Tree of Life

This 31 day series will focus on the things I learned from Proverbs, as well as some things from Torah study, and will add in a sprinkling of what I've learned from Judaism.

Today's reading is Proverbs 4, and verses 20-22 speak to my heart.

 My son, pay attention to what I am saying;
incline your ear to my words.
 Don’t let them out of your sight,
keep them deep in your heart;
for they are life to those who find them
and health to their whole being.

Each week when we parade the Torah around the synagogue, we keep our eyes on it and do not turn our backs on it.  This is a tangible reminder not to let them out of our sight and to keep them deep in our hearts.

The Word of Adonai is life giving.  Judaism compares the Torah to a Tree of Life.  We are instructed to keep it before our eyes.  We have several trees on the walls of our synagogue as reminders.

The signs say, "Etz  Chayim" - The Torah is a Tree of Life (in Hebrew and English).

Let's not miss the last part of verse 22 - "The Torah is health to their whole being".  Meditating on and obeying Torah affects our minds, which in turn affects our health.

Who knew?  I do now, because it has happened in my life.  I used to be a very fearful person, but studying Torah changed me.  Reading through the Torah yearly reminds me of G-d's faithfulness, provision, and protection.

I have nothing to fear when I am obedient to Him.
